How to refresh your study space

Whether studying from home was always your goal, or you ended up doing a course online because of COVID, having a space in your home where you can do your studies is a must.

Available space isn’t always easy to come by, but you don’t need much to set up a comfortable study area. Perhaps it could even be a multi-purpose area like a dining table.

With many of us working on portable devices, as long as you have somewhere you can set up comfortably you should be fine.

If you have already been working or studying from home for a while, it might be time to take another look at your study space to make sure it’s the best it can be. In fact, did you know that updating the area you are working in can have a range of benefits?

After a refresh you could expect benefits such as:

Increased productivity

A new study space could see you getting more done in less time. And who doesn’t want to achieve that? A change-up for your work area can mean you have fewer distractions. The addition of a drawer or similar to stash your phone away maybe?! Studies have shown a clean and tidy workspace has been found to increase the amount of time we are able to focus for. Perfect for getting assignments ticked off the list.

More creativity

Sometimes we can stagnate in certain space and it can be difficult to get your creativity flowing. Moving around some furniture or changing around your desk can spark creativity and help you to get out of any ruts you might have found yourself in.

A fresh outlook

Moving things around a little can help you see things from a new perspective – literally and figuratively! Tasks that previously left you procrastinating might start to happen more easily and you could enjoy being at your desk more, which will rub off on your work.

It don’t take much to make a notable difference to your study space. In turn, you will give yourself the best chance of success when it comes to getting your work done to a high standard.

5 tips to refresh your study space

Refreshing your work area can be achieved with just a little effort or by giving it a complete overhaul. It all depends on the time and energy you want to put in, and the space you have to work with.

These six tips will contribute to creating a study space that ensures you can reap the rewards of a desk refresh:

Add some plants

Being around plants has been proven to have a calming effect on us, reducing stress levels and improving our mental health. We can’t take nature walks all day every day, but we can bring a few plants indoors to restore us and our work space.

Declutter

Not only do mess and clutter make it difficult to locate things, but a chaotic study space can also clutter our minds. Putting notes into a book or folder, pens into a cup and popping away cords when you aren’t using them can make a big difference.

Prioritise comfort

Over the course of the week you probably spend quite a bit of time in your study area. With that in mind, it should be a space that is comfortable. Make sure your desk, chair and screen are at the right height for you to minimise risk of aching shoulders and back. Ergonomic desk furniture can be a worthwhile investment.

Maximise natural light

Where possible, set up a study space that has a window nearby for natural light. This can help you feel calm, reduce eye strain, improve your sleep and offer mental health benefits. No luck with a window view? Maximise the natural light where you can by opening blinds and curtains, and opt for a bright globe in the light or lamp to replicate natural light.

Personalise your space

While we have said limiting distractions is a good thing for your updated study space, a few pieces of art or personal items like photos can be beneficial. Unsurprisingly, research shows that uplifting art or photos makes us feel calm and happy. Plus, adding photos of your friends and family can help to foster an emotional connection with your studies which can bolster your desire to succeed.
