Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses are developed with the specific goal of employment in mind, and with high job demand in aged care and early childhood education and care, there has never been a better time to discover what vocational training has to offer.

What makes VET different
There are many things which make vocational education and training (VET) different from other forms of education. The primary feature of VET courses – compared to University and TAFE – is that they aim to provide a practical work-oriented skills base to enhance your employment outcomes.
Another way of saying this is that VET qualifications are specifically designed to prepare you for work, whether that looks like getting your dream job, re-joining the workforce, changing careers or upskilling in your current role.

VET is the best type of training for the job market
You may have heard that Australia currently faces a nationwide skills shortage. Certain sectors share an extremely high demand for skilled workers, and it may come as no surprise that both aged care and early childhood education and care are right at the top of that list.
Selmar is working with sector partners to provide a pipeline of skilled workers to both aged care and early childhood education by focusing on the specific training currently required by each sector.
One of the key ways we aim to prepare workers for the job is by making practical placement a component of every course. Giving our learners hands-on experience of the workplace in real time sets them up to be confident and capable workers, ensuring they have desirable skills and a high level of employability once qualified.
What you gain through VET
Becoming qualified through VET can be a rewarding experience on many levels. Here are just a few things you can expect from a VET course:
Flexibility
VET is accessible and suited to many people. With a range of study modes available you should be able to find a course option which aligns with your particular needs, circumstances and values – whether this looks like balancing life and study via online learning or earning while you learn with a traineeship.
A Streamlined Experience
Unlike university or TAFE courses, which can take many years to complete and may require graduates to undertake further study to become qualified, VET courses are designed so that you can get straight into the workplace. Most of our courses at Selmar take about a year to complete, and once you have your qualification you will be eligible for employment right away.
Opportunities to upskill
Once you’ve got the minimum qualification you can enhance your employability by upskilling. VET provides multiple opportunities to grow your skillset with further qualifications and short courses.
Practical skills
Of course, VET’s key advantage is its practical focus. You will be provided with the material resources, practical knowledge and hands on training required to excel in your chosen field.
Support from dedicated trainers
You’ll be supported, coached and mentored by dedicated trainers with valuable experience working in the sector.
Hands-on experience
All of our courses include a practical placement component, so that you get to experience what it’s like being employed in a real workplace. We also offer traineeships so you can earn money while gaining valuable skills on the job.
Pathway to employment
With practical skills, workplace experience and the ongoing support of trainers, VET learners have a clear advantage when it comes to getting a job once qualified.
Supporting the sector
Aged care and early childhood education continue to face pressing challenges surrounding skills and staff shortages. Vocational education and training has an important job to do, and the results of the NCVER survey are helpful in providing information which allows us to track our progress, strive for success and identify areas for change so that we can better support them.
It’s good to know that Selmar is successfully delivering what learners need in terms of skills, training and employment outcomes. We’re pleased our learners are satisfied, and feedback like this helps us stay dedicated to constant improvement.
