The New Aged Care Act: A Step Forward for Compassionate Aged Care

Aged care has always been about compassion for people first and foremost, which is why the new Aged Care Act 2024 is such an important step forward for our sector.

Coming into effect on 1 November 2025, the new Act puts older Australians at the heart of care, ensuring their rights, choices and wellbeing are prioritised in every interaction.

A focus on dignity and respect

At the centre of the new legislation is a Statement of Rights, providing a promise that everyone receiving aged care has the right to:

  • Make decisions about their own life and care
  • Be treated with dignity, respect and fairness
  • Feel safe, supported and free from abuse or neglect
  • Have their identity, culture and community connections valued
  • Communicate their wishes and be truly heard.

This goes beyond processes and compliance, focusing on recognising the individual behind the care plan. With this Act in place, accountability will be strengthened across the sector while making care more personal, transparent and compassionate.

What this means for aged care workers

For those already working in aged care, or considering a career in the field, this change highlights the true value of the important work you do. Quality care isn’t just about meeting needs; it’s about building trust, showing empathy and helping people feel valued every day.

The Act makes it clear that delivering high-quality care is about actively supporting older Australians to exercise choice and independence in their daily lives.

For those in the workforce, that means:

  • Taking time to listen and communicate clearly
  • Respecting each person’s cultural background and personal preferences
  • Creating safe, inclusive spaces where people feel valued
  • Speaking up when something doesn’t feel right.

It’s a shared commitment to uphold the dignity and wellbeing of every individual, every day.

The new legislation reflects what great care workers already know: the small moments of kindness and understanding are just as important as the practical support you provide.
