What is first aid?

Chances are you have a first aid kit in your home or workplace, filled with things like plasters, gauze, bandages and tweezers. But what is first aid and first aid training?

First aid is all about helping those around us who are in need. We are all prone to an accident or falling ill, and this can happen at any time so it’s vital for individuals to be ready to deliver medical help at times.

Defining first aid

First aid is the initial help provided to someone who is sick or injured. Quite literally, it is the first aid available to begin treating a person requiring medical assistance.

First aid can be performed by just about anyone, however with quality first aid training your assistance could be the difference between life and death for someone suffering from illness or injury.

The procedures involved in first aid

Providing first aid can be as simple as applying an adhesive plaster or as complex as performing CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation).

When you complete first aid training you gain the knowledge and skills to help people suffering from ailments including:

  • Asthma
  • Anaphylaxis
  • Burns
  • Bleeding
  • Shock
  • Drowning
  • Diabetes
  • Seizures
  • Choking
