So your birthday is coming up and you have to work.
Depending on how you feel about your workplace and colleagues, this is either an exciting proposition or, well, not that exciting at all.
Not all cultures and religions recognise birthdays as a big deal, but if you’re in the mood to celebrate there are plenty of ways to mark the occasion while bringing home the bacon.
1. Make Some Extra Effort
In the midst of the daily grind, it can be a little tempting to roll out of bed 15 minutes before you have to leave for work to get ready in as little time as possible. However if you want to honour your special day, consider getting up a little earlier for a more relaxed start. Take the time to spruce yourself up (if that makes you happy!) and perhaps pick out something you’d not normally wear to work.
2. Organise After Work Dinner or Drinks
Working on your birthday gets a whole lot easier when you’ve got something special to look forward to. In the days or weeks leading up to your birthday ask your colleagues if they’ll join you for an after work dinner or drink. If you include your boss, you might even get out of work a little earlier!
3. Treat Yourself At Lunch
Go on, it’s your birthday! Whether your colleagues have organised a cake (or you go and get one yourself), a bit of birthday indulgence may be just the thing to make your day. If you’ve got time for a nice lunch somewhere out of the ordinary, fit that in as well.
4. Get Yourself A Gift
Treat yourself to something special on your birthday without leaving the desk! A bit of online shopping might be just the thing to liven up your day. Or why not give a gift instead? World Vision provides a number of beautiful gifts that give back to communities that need them the most.
So there you have it. Four ways to celebrate your birthday at work – turns out you can have your cake and eat it too.
