What is home and community care?

As Australia’s population ages, our aged care sector is changing and adapting to offer more services to home and through community care.

Today’s miracles of modern medicine allow people to live longer. The number of people aged 65 to 84 is expected to more than double by 2050. The number of people over 85 will more than quadruple, with the highest growth among those aged 95 and older.

The Federal Government has made changes to aged care to help meet this growing demand for services. A new, consumer directed care model will give older people more choice in planning and receiving a wider range of at-home services.

Home and Community Care, commonly referred to as HACC, is a joint initiative of the state and federal governments, provides a range of basic maintenance and support services in the home to assist individuals and those living with disabilities. Home community care workers provide services to allow individuals to remain at home and help them maintain their independence.

The educator of choice in the aged care sector, Selmar Aged Care Education Institute offers a dual qualification Certificate III in Aged Care and Certificate III in Home and Community Care.

“Based on my experience working in the aged care sector, I recommend students combine these two highly regarded Aged Care courses,” says Selmar’s Aged Care Manager Kristel Stockton.

“If you are interested in gaining employment within the aged care industry in a residential facility or a home and community care environment, combining the Certificate III in Aged Care and Certificate III in Home and Community Care opens the doors to a booming industry.”
